In our day and age, the popularity of home tuition has grown significantly. There are
a number of reasons accounting for this. Before I proceed on how you can start this
business ,I would like to highlight on the reasons for the rise of this service.
Firstly, the rise of the Covid-19 pandemic can be said to be one of the most significant factor that accounted for this dynamic shift. Restrictions on social distancing causing students to stay at home, called for school authorities adopting innovative ways and finding immediate strategic moves to salvage the situation. The shift to virtual classrooms has indeed seen a surge in popularity, bringing with it both benefits and drawbacks. Although this was good, several key disadvantages have emerged,
particularly impacting students and the overall learning experience. Network
challenges, increased digital fatigue, and limited student-to-teacher interactions made weaker students most vulnerable in this circumstance.

Again, some parents would like their intelligent wards to be ahead of their class.
There are parents whose children are already performing well often described as
intelligent or gifted and they want them to go beyond what’s taught in school. For such families, the normal school curriculum feels slow or limiting; hence, home tuition offers a faster, more challenging learning path. Going through the normal school system feels like a delay to them. For instance, the youngest student admitted to the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is Melchizedek Adio Baafawiise, who is 13years old. Melchizedek wouldn’t be a university student if he went through the normal school system. He would either be in Junior High or early stage in Senior High School.
The last thing I would mention as being the reason for home tuition is the goal of
parents to give their children extra tuition to complement what is being taught in
schools. This is commonly referred to as “Extra Classes”. It is a way to ensure that
their children excel in their academics and also remain competitive among their peers. Here are some steps or pointers to aid one to start home tuition/extra classes;

Choose a teaching space
Decide on where you would like to conduct the tuition. It could be a well lit room
which is quiet and comfortable or have the lessons on a virtual platform like zoom or
google meet. In a physical space/ room at home, ensure that there are no distractions
like TVs, play toys or ipads that children can fidget with while studying. This option
of face to face learning can be done in the child’s home or the teachers home. Both
parties should be ready to bear the cost of commuting to meet each other. In a virtual
space ensure audible sound, video clarity and network connectivity.

Set teaching Goals
Identify the subjects that are in demand. Also, if the student is preparing for a major exam or test, be aware of the time frame. This will help you set a clear standard for tutoring. In addition, you will be able to set your short- and long-term objectives. This will help you set a clear standard for tutoring. Get your teaching materials ready
 Plan lessons according to the educational curriculum. For example, be familiar with the GES curriculum if the student attends a school that follows the Ghanaian traditional education system. For international schools, use the Cambridge or Oxford curriculum, depending on the school’s preference. Always create a clear lesson structure based on the student’s syllabus or specific learning goals.

 Use the right resources: Collect textbooks, workbooks, and reference guides
relevant to the student’s class /grade level and subject. Use educational videos,
online simulations, or interactive apps to make learning more engaging,
especially for visual or tech-savvy learners.

 Prepare practice exercises: Revision is a great way of reinforcing what has
been taught. This is key to retention in studying. Prepare worksheets, quizzes,
or practice questions to help students apply what they’ve learned.

Punctuality, adequate preparation and consistent communication between
parent and teacher is key.

If you are a home tutor, always keep parents informed about their child’s progress. Share regular progress reports or updates. It is equally important for parents to inquire about the child’s progress and learning challenges from teacher.

Build trust and professionalism
A good reputation is your best advertisement. Be friendly with your students while maintaining a professional profile. Keep communication open with students and parents. This will enable students to freely express themselves and share their weaknesses and challenges peculiar to them.

Keep improving your skills
To stay effective and competitive as a tutor, continuous improvement is essential.
Learn new methods of teaching, watch YouTube videos or take up online courses on the subject you are teaching. Seek regular and honest feedbacks from your students and parents. This will help you identify your weakness and work on becoming better as a tutor.

Conclusion
With thoughtful planning, a genuine commitment to quality teaching, a clear
understanding of your strengths and that of your student, you can create a rewarding and sustainable tutoring practice from the comfort of your home. Whether you’re helping a struggling student catch up, guiding a bright learner to go beyond the curriculum, or doing it for money, your efforts can leave a lasting impact.
