HOW TO OPERATE A DISPATCH BUSINESS IN ACCRA

According to Buske Logistics dispatch is the process of organizing and assigning orders for delivery, ensuring that goods are picked, packed and sent to their designated destinations promptly and accurately within the logistics workflow. Dispatch businesses are gradually becoming common in Ghana, and they are quite profitable.

The most important equipment needed in this business is a motorbike. It is important to note that you need to have the technical skills and required license to operate either as a side hustle or full-time job. Similar to any other business, dispatch has its own challenges. For the purpose of this article, I would like to focus on how to make deliveries within Accra.

CHALLENGES OF OPERATING A DELIVERY BUSINESS IN ACCRA

Being a delivery person in a traffic-prone city such as Accra is no joke. Customers expect instant service; as soon as you call them, they expect their package right away.

The following are some of the lessons I have learnt:

 1. Organize Your Parcels – Arrange them properly to avoid any damage.

 2. Call Customers Ahead of time to confirm their location, availability, and delivery costs before setting off.

3. Plan Your Route – Long distances and scattered deliveries can be costly, especially if the shop sets fixed delivery charges.

For example, if your pick-up point in Oyarifa sometimes requires delivery to Kasoa and Tema — two far-apart locations — with customers wanting their items at the same time. This is where patience and customer service skills come into play.

 GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE

In this business, how you speak to customers matters. Some may be arrogant or look down on you, but remaining polite can turn them into loyal clients. Often, customers do not answer calls, even when you are nearby. Good communication can make them more understanding — and even lead to tips.

You can build relationships with some customers to the point where, even if you delay, they do not mind because they trust you. You can even develop personal relationship with some of them.

 RISK

The delivery business comes with its fair share of risks.

Accidents: Navigating traffic and reckless drivers.

Lost or Damaged Parcels – Misplacing or mishandling items.

Wrong Deliveries – Mixing up customer orders.

Police Trouble – Getting stopped for lacking the right license or committing minor infractions under pressure.

 CONCLUSION

If you want to succeed as a delivery rider in Ghana it’s important to keep to the timelines you promise customers, confirm availability before starting your route, ensure parcels are well-labelled and secure and stay safe on the road thus one careless mistake from you or another driver could be costly.

Aside from being a side hustle, you can learn   patience, good customer service, and the value of reliability from this business. Delivery work in Ghana is not easy, but if done correctly, it can open doors that you never expected to exist.
